THE ENGLISH MR. BARRET

“…I was first mate at the time. My, how that old boat rolled and tossed. First to the right, then to the left. Able seaman that I was, it fair ‘put the wind up’ me. I was standing near the front and had just started for the back of the boat when a bloody wave thirty feet high hit us almost broadside and I was thrown against a life-boat. Broke a leg, I did. Smashed two ribs and got this ugly scar on my forehead,” continued the garrulous passenger who had been regaling the Professor with his adventures.

Fordney was on a mission to Buenos Aires and had hoped (quite futilely it seemed) to keep his identity unknown. To his annoyance he had been recognized by this talkative shipmate, while taking a stroll.

The usually amiable and genial Professor was ordinarily fond of society, but on this voyage he would have preferred being left alone. He was tired and a bit fed up.

“And then…” but this time he interrupted his companion.

“English, aren’t you, Mr. Barret?”

“I’m not the one to deny that,” came the rather bellicose reply.

“Well, you’ll pardon me, Mr. Barret,” Fordney emphasized the name slightly. “Here’s my cabin… I have some writing to do.”

“Righto! See you in the lounge at tea-time.” The Professor closed his stateroom door with a sigh, threw himself on the bed.

“A first mate!” he scoffed. “Let’s see now. Barret. English. The man’s a rank impostor!”

Fordney dozed.
